Still, strange as it may be, I count Peter Jordan as a friend.

You see, when I first moved to France to start my new and simple life, one of the books I brought over with me was The New Guide to Mushrooms by Peter Jordan.

And, as I started to mushroom, it was that book that guided me. It was that book that I read and re-read until I could practically memorise it.

So many times did that book come into the forest with me, I swear it knew its way home better than I did!

Today, as I was working on this site, I had his book on the desk in front of me and I thought that it was about time to email the man and let him know how important his book had become to me.

You can image my shock then, when I found out that Peter Jordan had passed away last November after a short illness.

And somehow, it seems that there is a space in the forest – an empty space where Peter Jordan used to be.

His Life

Peter’s interest in the countryside, and especially in mushrooms started at a very early age when he walked the fields and woods with his grandfather who farmed in Suffolk. His early career in banking ended in 1983 when, after 28 years, he retired as the manager of the University Branch of Lloyds Bank in Cambridge.

Then for ten years, from 1984-94, Peter and his wife, Valerie ran a pub and restaurant in rural Norfolk: the Lord Nelson, Burnham Market.

The Lord Nelson became famous throughout the country for its exotic wild mushroom dishes and was widely known as ‘The Mushroom Pub’.

In 1994 Peter and Valerie left The Lord Nelson and Peter could now concentrate on his book and video projects. The Tasty Mushroom Partnership was born to promote Peter’s first video, or as Peter liked to describe his career ‘from pounds to pints to penny buns’.

Success Beckons

Peter appeared on television with chefs Gary Rhodes, Brian Turner and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, and regularly on Radio Norfolk. Peter and Valerie were also familiar faces at food fairs, where they enthusiastically promoted The Tasty Mushroom Partnership and all aspects of mushroom hunting.

Following the first successful book ‘The Ultimate Mushroom Book’ first published in 1995 with many subsequent reprints, his new book was launched in September 2006. Entitled ‘A Field Guide to the Edible Mushrooms of Britain and Europe’ published by New Holland, the book contains over 300 new photographs taken by Peter Henley and Peter Jordan and gives all the information you need for successful hunting as well as some useful cooking hints.

The Tasty Mushroom Partnership

I found much of the above information on Peter’s Website… www.tastymushroompartnership.co.uk which has been left in place to to operate as a memorial to Peter and to make sure that his books and DVD’s remain available.

Good luck with your hunting and be careful when collecting wild mushrooms. I’m sure that if Peter Jordan was here he would repeat his heartfelt advice…. “If in doubt leave it out!”
